Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) serves as a hydraulic barrier by combining bentonite clay with layers of geotextile and in some cases, geomembrane liner. GCL can be used as a standalone alternative for a compacted clay liner, or as a supplement to a geomembrane liner system. Its low permeability and high shear strength provide long lasting resistance under harsh conditions.
GCL can be quickly and efficiently installed further contributing to its low cost compared to compacted clay liner. Rolls are deployed using a spreader bar attached to a piece of equipment such as a front end loader or extendable boom forklift. Loose bentonite is then placed under the overlap effectively seaming the liner.
Deployed GCL must be covered with soil as soon as possible to avoid premature hydration of the bentonite.
